Sujon Ishaq’s architectural work revolves around his appreciation for the formal and sentimental qualities of spaces. He derives the most inspiration from model making, hand drawing, and exploration of materials. His current work delves deeper into conceptual and speculative projects, both through architecture and object making.

Lately he has been exploring the art of contemporary architecture and minimal design. He deeply believes in the beauty achieved through simple and light gestures. How do you pare down a design to its very essence and core qualities? This is a question he continually asks himself as he explores a sense of oneness through his architectural designs, just like in his artistic practice.

The color white, grey and monochromatic visuals are crucial to his architectural representation. Colors could be brought to a space through lighting, art and funiture, though with respect to the interior and exterior architectural aesthetic. All material is simply a slight suggestion hence no permanent promise is made through colourful visualization. His aesthetic tries to capture the image right before it fades away. It is almost like the feeling of capturing absence with a light touch of imagination.

Most of his designs and locations/sites are conceptual. He enjoys the thinking process, where he may be imagining a space down to the detail for days before ultimately producing a sketch. Imagining and and thinking thoroughly is the utmost joyful moment of the design process. He also finds joy in creating hand drawings and models as part of his process. Testing out deifferent material for model making has been also a part of his creative process.

He realizes his academic work is expected to be somewhat more commercial and convincing to academia, which blocks the freedom of creative expression within architecture. Therefore a majority of his architectureal projects are done at his own leisure with full freedom and no brief. He believes not all art form has to be explained, expected to be explained nor to be understood. The pure essence of the design can be percieved by the viewer. Less explanation allows more interpretation. Not all desgins have to constructive, functional or “normal”.

Alot of designs are inspired by the concept of home or to slow down in this fast paced capitalistic society. Having to move many homes and cities in his life, the conversation of slowing down and creating an ideal home has always been a luxary and dream. He also enjoys designing a world of spaces that allow for harmony in doing the utmost joyful activities. Perhaps a getaway from the city, a space to view the stars at night, or a space for an intimate retreat.
