MEG Shop
personal projectMEG shop is a contemporary clothing brand for women. The Canadian fashion designer (client) started her journey in New York thrity years ago with now multiple shops across New York and Toronto.
The goal for this project was to renovate an existing space to invite in clients on an appointment basis with the aim of treating the space as a blank canvas while allowing the clothes to construct the color palette. The client was decisive about their needs from the beginning of the design process regarding the aesthetic and atmosphere they wanted to create in this challenging 200 sq ft space.
Three main programs were suggested in order to meet the functinality of the space: a space to house clothes that directly communicates with the client, a storage space for stock, and a changing room.
The main drama of the design centers around creating an illusion using mirrors as a vehicle to visually and psychlogically expand the space to a size that wouldn’t make customers in the small space feel claustrophobic or limited, and to instead enhance the minimal experience. The artistic aspect of the design relied on, for example, details such as choosing to have pocket doors that blend in with the mirrored facade to maximum advantage of the space. We had the opportunity to make conscious and meaningful design choices from the most minute to larger and more significant aspects of the store. This meant choosing door handles and fittings, choosing to use natural stones as seating space, designing clothes racks and the service desk, as well as redoing the floors with a sunken cutout for the door mat to sink into seamlessly, level with the ground. This allowed us to create a space that allows the customer to experience a cohesive and thoughtfully designed environment.
The feel of the store is ephemeral and ever-changing as each new season introduces new color palettes and materialities, though allowing the pure essence of the store’s fuctionality to remain intact with its designated programs and illusion.
