academic project

This project aims to build a house of memories to commemorate the individuals buried in Brooklyn's Greenwood Cemetery. Death, for Sujon Ishaq, connotes a return to the earth. This is why material, specifically earth, became an important consideration when realizing the design approach. The project explores this through the physical model making process where clay is used to experiment with various forms. conceptually, this shown an understanding of the circle of life by eliminating edges in this design by using curves instead. At the same time, it creates the experience of being underground to feel the heft of the earth. The spaces require visitors to be alone and feel solitude, as a way of mimicking the experience of death and burial.

The hand sketched plan of this project communicates all the variables and explorations. The drawing also illustrates the visual of the programs in a 3D manner.

All visuals below are model photographs.
