cityscape
academic projectThe cityscape project is located in Astoria, Queens, NY, a site that I decided, unlike a conventional site study, to explore through the sense of smell. This project functioned to mainly propose alternative options to high-end luxury apartment buildings in the neightborhood that was contributing to gentrification and displacement. After various interviews, surveys, and studies with the community, we arrived at particular programs that could instead add value to the community.
Above are intial hand sketches suggesting a space that shares layers of programs, and energy for the community and the site.
Programs include a mosque, pottery studio, renovating an existing sports pub, a public pool, a ceramics shop, an affordable residential building as well as multiple green spaces.
Majority of the project follows a grid system, barring an orientation concept from the propsed mosque for the Muslim community, which faces a partcular direction in order for prayer.
